Additional details have been released about the proposed settlement to end the Medicare requirement of showing improvement in order to receive coverage of skilled care and therapy services. Medicare recipients can expect to see changes in Medicare & You so that the sections which currently cite a patient’s need to show improvement will instead cite the beneficiary’s need for skilled care. Health and Human Service will also begin a nationwide education campaign to communicate the changes and will review samples of claims to ensure the new standards are being followed. Perhaps of most interest to Medicare patients is the proposal to review claims that received a final non-appealable denial of coverage after Jan. 8, 2011.
