Fed says nursing homes overbilled for therapy

The Medicare Payment Advisory Committee, a federal watchdog agency, raised concerns about improper billing for therapy by skilled nursing facilities (SNF).  Based on a survey by the Office of Attorney General, SNFs overcharged by $1.5 billion for therapy services that were either not needed or not provided.  The study goes on to say that about a quarter of all billing by SNFs were billed incorrectly.    Nursing home industry officials are fighting back, claiming that the survey didn’t take into account individual patients’ needs and questioning the appropriateness of the survey as the survey was of charges in 2009.  Read the Kaiser Health News article here.
