October is coming and there’s going to be a lot of push from states and the Obama administration to get uninsured Americans to enroll in health coverage but if you are eligible for Medicare, stick your fingers in your ears and hum loudly because the ads aren’t for you. Officials are concerned about the number of seniors who may panic and call or sign up for insurance they don’t need. The “Medicare & You” handbook that comes out each year will have a prominent notice this year advising people that there’s nothing for them to do about it. It’s poor timing because Oct. 15 is when open enrollment begins for Medicare beneficiaries so the crossover is bound to create confusion. Scams are also likely to be hot. Kaiser Health News covers this in more detail here. You don’t want to make the switch to one of the health plans as Medicare is a much better deal and more affordable. If you are confused contact Medicare at http://www.medicare.gov/ or call toll free, 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). This is an excellent time to request copies of the white papers covering Medicare Advantage, Medigap and choosing between the two. Contact info@agingoptions.com if you are interested.
